Swiss engineer George de Mestral invented Velcro after observing burrs clinging to his clothing and his dog’s fur during a walk in the woods in 1941. Fascinated by the clinging mechanism of the burrs, Mestral examined them under a microscope and discovered tiny hooks that snagged onto any fabric or fur with loops or small tangles. Mestral saw potential in this natural adhesive system and decided to create a commercial product based on it. After years of experimentation, Mestral developed a hook-and-loop fastener system using nylon that could endure strong pulling forces without tearing and maintain adhesion over multiple cycles of attachment and detachment. Despite initial skepticism, Velcro gained popularity in specialized fields like medical applications and sports equipment, eventually finding widespread use in everyday items such as children’s shoes and clothing. Velcro's design has been refined, featuring stronger hooks, softer loop materials, and color variations. The invention of Velcro highlights the importance of keen observation, persistence, and curiosity in spurring innovation. It also serves as an example of biomimicry, or looking to nature for design inspiration.
