George Foreman, born January 10, 1949, in Marshall, Texas, rose from a troubled youth in Houston’s Fifth Ward to become a boxing legend. He won Olympic gold in 1968 and the heavyweight title in 1973 by knocking out Joe Frazier. After losing to Muhammad Ali in 1974’s “Rumble in the Jungle,” a near-death experience in 1977 led him to retire and become a preacher. Returning to boxing in 1987, he reclaimed the heavyweight title in 1994 at age 45, the oldest ever to do so. Beyond the ring, he became a beloved entrepreneur, selling over 100 million George Foreman Grills. Foreman died peacefully on March 21, 2025, at 76, surrounded by loved ones in Houston.
