Et cum spiritu tuo. - And with your spirit.
As we journey through this holy season of Lent, Holy Mother Church today places before our eyes two striking realities: the call to be imitators of God in all holiness and the undeniable reality of spiritual warfare.
Epistle: Ephesians 5:1–9
"Be ye therefore followers of God, as most dear children: and walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath delivered Himself for us, an oblation and a sacrifice to God for an odor of sweetness."
Reflection:
St. Paul exhorts us to imitate God by living lives of purity, sacrifice, and charity. Lent is not merely about giving things up, but about becoming more Christlike. The Apostle warns us to avoid immorality, covetousness, and even crude speech not just grave sins, but the daily compromises that stain the soul. The saints like St. Benedict, St. Louis de Montfort, and St. Dominic — understood that holiness is not for the few, but the duty of all baptized souls.
In a world that glorifies impurity and mocks sacrifice, we are reminded that we must live as children of light — rejecting the darkness and its empty promises.
Gospel: Luke 11:14–28
"Every kingdom divided against itself shall be brought to desolation... He who is not with Me is against Me; and he who does not gather with Me scatters."
Reflection:
Our Lord casts out a devil and is accused by some of doing so by Beelzebub. Christ, in His divine wisdom, exposes the absurdity of this claim and reveals a spiritual law: a house divided against itself cannot stand.
This Gospel is a powerful reminder of spiritual warfare. The devil is real. Demonic influence is real. But so is Christ’s authority over it. Every Lent, we are reminded that Satan must be cast out of every corner of our lives. Not only through Confession, but by rooting out sin in all its forms habits, entertainment, relationships, compromises.
Our Lord says, “He who is not with Me is against Me.” There is no neutral ground. Either we are drawing closer to Christ in this Lent, or we are drifting. Let us also take heed of Our Lord's final warning: “Blessed are they who hear the word of God and keep it.”
This is not about emotional experiences or pious feelings it's about obedience, sacrifice, and perseverance in grace.
The Church reminds us today that Christ is the Stronger One, who binds the devil and takes possession of our souls but He must be welcomed. We cannot allow worldliness, impurity, or laziness to reclaim us after we have been cleansed.
As Dom Gueranger writes in The Liturgical Year:
“Let us make haste to fill the house of our soul with the treasures of grace, lest the wicked spirit return and find it empty.”
Conclusionary Prayer:
Let us pray.
O God, who by Thy wondrous mercy didst deliver Thy people from the bondage of sin and didst strengthen them against the snares of the enemy: grant, we beseech Thee, that by Thy grace we may walk as children of light, casting off the works of darkness, and never again giving place to the devil. Through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, St. Joseph, and all the saints, especially St. Michael the Archangel, protect us in this Lenten combat. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Thank you for joining us today. Remain steadfast in prayer, fasting, and almsgiving for our salvation draws near. Until next time, may God bless you and keep you.
