Art

A visual object or experience consciously created through an expression of skill or imagination. The term art encompasses diverse media such as painting, sculpture, printmaking, drawing, decorative arts, photography, and installation.

The various visual arts exist within a continuum that ranges from purely aesthetic purposes at one end to purely utilitarian purposes at the other.

Such a polarity of purpose is reflected in the commonly used terms artist and artisan, the latter understood as one who gives considerable attention to the utilitarian. This should by no means be taken as a rigid scheme, however.

Is music art?
Is ballet art?
Is jazz art?
Are cats and dogs art?
Is art art?

art history, historical study of the visual arts, being concerned with identifying, classifying, describing, evaluating, interpreting, and understanding the art products and historic development of the fields of painting, sculpture, architecture, the decorative arts, drawing, printmaking, photography, interior design, etc

Art is made to be seen. In contrast, nature, prodigal and thoughtless, takes no heed of visibility: William Wordsworth celebrates the flowers that “waste their sweetness on the desert air and the treasures lying hidden in “the dark unfathomed caves of ocean.

In order to experience art, we should of course visit museums. They are the prime locus where the uniqueness of an artist work can be encountered. Yet even in museums, which are more and more acquiring the significance of churches, art is seen in very unpromising conditions.
