Nicodemus was a member of the Sanhedrin meaning the assembly really it means those sitting together. This group was considered by the Jewish community to be the ruling class for all religious matters. They were the learned ones, supposedly. To be fair they were well educated in the TORAH and the Tanach.
Nicodemus saw something in Yeshua, he saw the power of GOD. And Nicodemus (whose name means a conqueror) knew nothing about the power of the Holy Spirit. He knew nothing of the one thing he lacked: To be born again.
1COR 12:13, for by One Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Gentiles, whether bond or free...
EZE 36:24-28, I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean; I will cleanse you from all your impurities and from all your idols. I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in MY statutes, and keep MY judgments, and do them. Then you will live in the land I gave your ancestors; you will be MY people, and I will be your GOD.
Nicodemus followed the Law, in fact, he taught others how to follow it. He knew the covenant between GOD and HIS people. As far as Nicodemus was concerned, he thought he had all he needed to get to Heaven. He was after all a Jew by blood, and a member of the Sanhedrin as well. On the surface, Nicodemus appeared to have punched every ticket.
This term Heaven is related to a concept of a Kingdom. The kingdom of Heaven is available by faith. That is why Yeshua came, HE extended HIS grace, and that is why we enter into a covenant relationship with HIM. That is why we are not to view Heaven, this concept of a Heavenly Kingdom only as something that occurs when we die (of course it is). However, it is also a present-day reality for every believer.
That is why we are not to view Heaven, this concept of a Kingdom only as something that occurs when we die. But we do see a glimpse of that Kingdom here, this side of Heaven. But only in Heaven will we fully see that Kingdom.1 COR 2:9, “Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, Nor have entered into the heart of man the things which GOD has prepared for those who love HIM.”
COL 2:9, For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form, MAT 9:6, “But I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.”
