Paths of Glory (1957)

Directed by Stanley Kubrick and starring Kirk Douglas. Set during World War I, the film follows Colonel Dax (Douglas), a French officer who is ordered to lead his soldiers in a suicidal attack against a heavily fortified German position. When the assault fails, the army’s ruthless generals select three soldiers to be court-martialed and executed as scapegoats. Dax, a former lawyer, fights to defend them, exposing the corruption and cruelty of the military hierarchy.
