Nehemiah Lesson-04: Work, Watch, Pray (Part II)

This Week’s Lesson

Today we are in Lesson-04 in the series “Rebuilding the Covenant Community” from the book of Nehemiah.
 
This is Volume II of our series: “After the Exile” a study of Ezra-Nehemiah-Esther.
 
The lesson is titled “Work, Watch, Pray – Part II” and our focus passage is Nehemiah 4.
 
Please find your way in your Bible to that passage.

In our previous episode, we began our teaching of Nehemiah 3-4, a study we are calling “Work, Watch, Pray.”
 
In CH3, we see Nehemiah diligently and skillfully organizing and leading the Jewish Exiles to do the work of repairing the walls and the gates around the city of Jerusalem.
 
It’s a very detailed account of who was involved and what was accomplished. It’s also a wonderful picture of God’s covenant people united to do the work they were called out to do.
 
People from all classes of society joined the effort. Men and women, priests and laymen, worked side by side.
 
Most of the community was involved but there were a few who refused to help. Still the work advanced. The people were motivated and focused. Each one was taking care of their assignment.
 
That’s how kingdom work gets done. We need to take assigned spot and get to it in the power of the Holy Spirit.

In today’s lesson we will conclude our study Neh. 3-4, Work, Watch, Pray.
 
God’s covenant people have a relentless enemy. He is always seeking to devour, to steal, to kill and to destroy (John 10:10; I Peter 5:8).
 
This is especially true if God’s covenant people are walking in obedience to Him (II Tim 3:12).
 
In this chapter we see a great example of this principle. As the work progresses, the enemies of God’s people will attempt to derail the work.
 
Their opposition tactics begin to unfold here. We will learn how Nehemiah and the Exiles respond to this opposition from without.
