Turkey protests: Erdogan says opposition engaged in “street terrorism” as hundreds arrested

Hundreds of people have been arrested in Turkey following violent clashes between protesters and security forces.

The country’s interior ministry said more than 300 people had been detained in over a dozens cities during protests on Friday evening.

On Saturday evening, hundreds of supporters of detained Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu gathered in front of a courthouse where he faced further questions over allegations of corruption and terrorism links.

Imamoglu is considered the President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's main political rival. His arrest comes just days ahead of his expected nomination as a presidential candidate.
