This new budget no-touch thermometer from OxiPro is apparently in use by the HNS, but that aside, what else does it have to offer?

In the rather small but nicely designed box were the thermometer itself, a soft carry bag, two AAA batteries, a quick start guide and a separate user guide. The build quality of everything seems first-rate, robust and well made. The User Guide is comprehensive but is small in size and not easy to read.

The device has a detachable cover which reveals the plastic probe used when taking in-ear measurements. The probe is kept covered for normal use. Below the screen on the front of the device are the mode and larger combined power/measurement buttons.

The unit has four operating modes, - In-Ear, Forehead, Baby Forehead and Surface Modes (can be used to take the temperature of baby food etc). These are selectable with the mode button and confirmed with an on screen icon. There is a memory option to store the last 40 readings taken.

Before operating for the first time, remove the batteries and set the switch inside the compartment to select Fahrenheit or Celcius readings, this only needs to be done once. Then, press the power button to switch on and the smaller button above it to set the operating mode - Child Forehead, Adult Forehead, In-Ear or Surface - a screen icon shows the selected mode. For either forehead mode, hold the sensor 0-3 cm above the forehead and press the power button to take a reading which is then displaced on the screen. For Surface mode follow the same procedure.

Things are slightly different for In-Ear mode, remove the magnetic cover from the probe sensor, the unit automatically enters In-Ear mode, and place the probe gently into the ear canal, press the power button to take a reading.

The backlit colour coded screen shows the results and status with light blue for standby, green for a normal reading, orange for slightly elevated and red for fever. The exact results are shown numerically on each screen. To access the 40 step memory, long press the top button and again to scroll through the readings.

Using it could not be more simple with a straightforward one-button press operation. It takes about one second to work and beeps when the temperature reading is ready. The beeping can be disabled as required.

This is an attractive and well designed thermometer and at £16.99 is cheaper than many rivals. There are plenty of others available but they may lack the quality and features of this device. According to the Amazon page, this unit is currently in use by the NHS, which has to be a plus. For the low price I think this has to be a very decent buy.
