Ideal:
* Isolated but not too far from a town / civilization
* In a town or near what used to be civilization
* High elevation or close to water

Pros:
* Plenty of ammo and weapons to choose from
* Camping / survival gear
* Rations type food supplies that last
* Plenty of tools and supplies to construct whatever you might need

Cons:
* An obvious choice for people to go to. You might have a lot of "interested" parties
* Usually there are quite a few windows to cover as well as entry points
