I needed a cheap no nonsense coffee maker to use in my home office to keep me going during the day. This one was the cheapest drip machine I could find on Amazon - but can it be any good for just £22?

In the attractive and surprisingly up market box, I received the coffee maker, a borosilicate glass carafe, a nylon coffee filter, a small coffee scoop and a large but poorly printed user guide. Build quality seems lightweight and flimsy but probably adequate to get the job done.

The first thing that struck me when taking the items from the box was just how lightweight it all was. The coffee maker itself weighed in at less than 700g, increasing to 1.3kg when the carafe is included. The unit claims to have a non slip base, but just a touch will send it skidding across the table, although it gets a bit better when the tank is full.

The machine is much like any other I have used. A 1.5 ltr water tank, a keep warm heating pad with a rounded glass carafe, inside a removable nylon coffee filter. There is a single combined power button and status LED on the front.

The basic features are included including a keep warm pad for the carafe which turns off after forty minutes, an anti-drip switch which stops the filter process when the carafe is removed, and a reusable nylon coffee filter obviating the need for paper filters.

The tank and filter mechanism did need a heavier than usual pre use scrub to attempt to remove the horrible plastic taste which persisted even through the first few brews. After that, it worked perfectly well and now makes a perfectly acceptable cup of coffee without making a lot of fuss about it.

Not bad for £22.
