Around the turn of the era, the Jewish people, in general, were eagerly expecting for God to redeem his people. This notion of redemption was understood in a few different ways. But many were anticipating a coming redeemer figure who would restore the nation of Israel and re-establish the Davidic dynasty. They referred to this figure as the Messiah. A number of biblical texts were interpreted as foretelling what sort of figure he would be. In this lecture I discuss several of these texts and their reception within the context of second temple messianic expectations.
