The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957)

Directed by David Lean, based on the novel by Pierre Boulle. Set during World War II, it follows British prisoners of war forced by the Japanese to build a railway bridge in Burma. Their leader, Colonel Nicholson (Alec Guinness), insists on constructing a well-built bridge as a point of pride, unaware that Allied forces plan to destroy it.
It won seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture.
