On January 1, 2002, the 2,700-year journey of the drachma came to an end. The oldest currency in human history was withdrawn from circulation and replaced by the euro. The Ministry of Finance immediately destroyed all printing presses used for the drachma’s production. Yet, the people of Greece regret the introduction of the foreign euro and the loss of a piece of their heritage. That is why the hope for the drachma’s return still lingers.

If you notice any inaccuracies in the text, please don’t be too harsh—after all, the literary protagonist of these verses, the Drachma herself, is 2,700 years old. She might have mixed something up or forgotten a detail or two, and besides, her Russian isn’t nearly as good as her Greek.

Explanations for Certain Lines in the Poem:
"I remember the victory of the three black colonels."
In 1967, power in Greece was seized by a group of military officers led by Brigadier General Stylianos Pattakos and Colonels Georgios Papadopoulos and Nikolaos Makarezos. These were the so-called “Black Colonels,” a term coined by Soviet journalists due to the color of their uniforms. Western media, less poetic in their phrasing, simply referred to them as “the Greek junta.”

"I remember all the Olympic awards."
The Olympic Games were originally conceived in Greece, making the drachma inherently connected to their history.

"In the Bible, I was the lost drachma."
The Bible contains the Parable of the Lost Drachma, told by Jesus Christ.

I remember the scorching, greedy hands
Of warriors from mighty Macedon’s lands,
Conquering half of the world out of boredom,
With bronze-cast helmets and horsehair adornments.

I remember the chime of my necklaces bright,
Taken at night, whether gently or tight.
I recall silent and sorrowful hoards,
Alms that were given to beggars ignored.

I remember all songs and the myths of Hellas,
The triumph of three colonels, so zealous.
I remember Olympians’ glorious fame,
And laurels won, and bans of shame.

I was of gold, of silver, of copper,
Paper, nickel, a nation’s offer.
I was the drachma lost in the pages
Of the Bible’s wisdom through the ages.

Now I am locked in private collections,
Trapped in museums of ancient reflections.
Rarely I surface in auctions grand—
Once I roamed freely, now lost to the land.

Euro in Greece: its notes and its coins.
Will anyone grieve or seek to atone?
And in the lines of a newspaper mourns:
"Drachma, forever withdrawn and gone!"

Yet how serenely you carry on,
Singing, feasting from dusk till dawn.
Gone and forgotten—Bitcoin’s the song,
Drachma’s withdrawn and forever gone!

Воинов царства царя Македонского,
Завоевавших полмира от скуки
В шлЕмах из бронзы и волоса конского.

Помню свой звон в ожерельях красивых,
Ночью снимаемых или срываемых.

В аукционах бываю нечасто.
Мною оставлены всЕ территории.

В Греции Евро: банкноты, монеты.
Кто-то попросит за это прощения?
И эпитафия в строчках газеты:
«Драхма, изъятая из обращения»!

Как же убийственно все вы спокойны.
Спите, едите и учитесь пению.
И позабыли, вам в радость биткойны,
Драхма изъята из обращения!

1 января 2002 года путь драхмы длительностью 2700 лет завершился. Старейшая монета в истории человечества была выведена с рынка и заменена на евро. Министерство финансов сразу же уничтожило все станки для печати драхмы. Но жители Греции жалеют о введении в оборот чужеземного евро и потере частички своего наследия. Поэтому надежда на возврат драхмы жива.
Если обнаружите в тексте погрешности, не будьте слишком строги, ведь литературному герою, точнее героине, от имени которой написаны стихи – Драхме все-таки 2700 лет, и она могла что-нибудь напутать или подзабыть, да и русский язык она знает хуже греческого.

Пояснения к некоторым строчкам стихотворения:
«Помню победу трех черных полковников».
В 1967 году власть в Греции захватила группировка военных под предводительством бригадного генерала Стилианоса Паттакоса и полковников Георгиоса Пападопулоса и Николаоса Макарезоса. Это и были «черные полковники». Такое прозвище им дали советские журналисты из-за цвета военной формы. Западная пресса, не столь виртуозно владевшая слогом, писала просто «греческая хунта».

«Все олимпийские помню награды».
Олимпийские Игры были придуманы в Греции, поэтому драхма имеет к ним непосредственное отношение.

«В Библии драхмой была потерянной».
В Библии есть притча о потерянной драхме, рассказанная Иисусом Христом.
