STARMER To Face War Crimes Charges?
Right, so as you might have seen the other day, in a question put to him by Labour MP Rupa Huq, David Lammy, our drip of a foreign secretary and no stranger to expressing his deep devotion to the state of Israel accidentally found his spine and ended up calling what Israel is doing in Gaza by way of the blockade of aid into the Strip a breach of international law. He was right for a change, it is breaching international law, it has done for decades in many other ways, but in the context of this aid blockade, which was the focus if the question put to him, he was right, it’s a clear breach to be using starvation as a weapon, yet within hours, Lammy had clearly had a dressing down and a statement issued by Downing Street clarified that Israel was actually only ‘at risk’ of committing a breach of international law, starvation according presumably to the former alleged human rights barrister that lied his way to becoming Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, is just a bit naughty, not illegal. Some humans have more rights than others it would appear.
Well this is par for the course for Starmer when it comes to Israel, shielding them at every turn, but now the law might be turning its focus on him as a result, so will Israel shield you Keith? Probably not. Get the popcorn out folks, because Starmer might be heading towards his comeuppance.
Right, so with Israel having resumed every bit of its atrocities in Gaza once more, the timing of the launch of a new international legal coalition to challenge the illegal actions of politicians from around the world aiding and abetting those accused of war crimes and crimes against humanity in Israel perhaps couldn’t be better. The Global 195 coalition, a formidable alliance of lawyers and legal experts from around the world, has set its sights on holding individuals and entities legally accountable for their roles in the ongoing violence against Palestinians. Among its targets are not only Israeli officials and military personnel but also foreign politicians and institutions accused of aiding and abetting these alleged crimes. One such figure who may find himself in the crosshairs of this legal initiative therefore, particularly since this project is being spearheaded by the UK’s very own International Centre of Justice for Palestinians, the ICJP, is Keir Starmer, our Prime Minister, though has often had us wondering who exactly is he running this country for, in UK interests or Israels. His unwavering support for Israel and consistent refusal to condemn its actions have drawn widespread criticism for quite some time now, right down to attempting to change the definition of the word genocide and if that isn’t a obvious example of trying to protect Israel from facing the consequences of their crimes I don’t know what is.
The Global 195 coalition was launched on Tuesday, to basically zero fanfare in the UK media, despite this launch taking place here in the UK, in London. This initiative has come into being as a direct response to the global failure to hold Israel accountable for its actions in Gaza and the occupied Palestinian territories, alongside those who have incessantly provided cover for them politically. The coalition, which includes prominent legal minds from across the globe, was spearheaded by the International Centre for Justice for Palestinians, the ICJP, who are a UK-based organisation dedicated to pursuing justice for Palestinians through legal means. The ICJP has long been a vocal critic of Israel’s policies, accusing it of systematic human rights violations, war crimes, and genocide. The formation of Global 195 represents a significant escalation in these efforts therefore, to make this a global action a global legal movement, as it seeks to leverage international law to prosecute individuals and organisations complicit in these crimes Israel are committing.
At its launch event, the ICJP emphasized that the coalition would target not only Israeli nationals but also foreign politicians, military officials, and corporations that have facilitated or supported Israel’s actions. This broad scope underscores the coalition’s belief that accountability must extend beyond the immediate perpetrators, such as those who might have International Criminal Court arrest warrants out for them, to include those who enable or condone their crimes and this is where Keir Starmer could find himself on Global 195’s list.
Keir Starmer’s record on Israel has been gut-wrenchingly unforgivable. A former human rights lawyer, so he can hardly feign ignorance about such matters, Starmer has consistently taken Israel’s side, citing national security and the right of self defence over and over again to excuse their actions. Even in the face of overwhelming evidence of war crimes and human rights abuses, he has gone that extra mile for them. His refusal to describe Israel’s military operations in Gaza as genocide, to acknowledge the war crimes committed as war crimes, has disgusted an entire nation, but then this is a guy who described himself as a Zionist without equivocation, the only surprise to many of us here in the UK is that on this, he actually seems to have told the truth for once.
One of the most damning indictments of Starmer’s complicity came from Francesca Albanese, the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian territories. In a statement late last year year, Albanese called for Starmer to be investigated for his role in aiding and abetting Israel’s war crimes. She argued that his refusal to condemn Israel’s actions and his continued support for arms sales to the country could amount to complicity under international law. This accusation has placed Starmer in a precarious position, her word carries weight and it seems unlikely the ICJP or the Global 195 coalition aren’t aware of her words and certainly will be aware of Starmer actions.
Starmer’s complicity is not limited to his rhetoric. Under his leadership, the government has maintained its support for arms sales to Israel, having been forced into suspending a handful of arms sales licences, but not all, doing the bare minimum to keep out of trouble is how that could come across and despite the mounting evidence, not least again now, that these weapons are being used to commit war crimes.
So consistent has he been in this that even when David Lammy, the foreign secretary, stated this week that the aid blockade on Gaza, an act of starving the population was a breach of international law, Starmer rowed back on this position too, it can only have come from him given Lammy’s seniority in government, to say this was only a potential breach. Starvation of a population half of whom are kids and Starmer provides cover for Israel again it would seem.
The ICJP has made it clear that no one is above the law, including UK politicians. In a statement released shortly after the launch of Global 195, the organisation warned that it would pursue prosecutions against any UK citizens found to be complicit in Israel’s war crimes. This warning can easily therefore be interpreted as being aimed at Starmer amongst others who have supported Israel’s actions. The ICJP’s commitment to holding UK officials accountable reflects a growing recognition that complicity in war crimes is not limited to those who pull the trigger but also includes those who provide political, financial, or military support, too often getting away with nothing but criticism for it.
At the coalition’s launch event, ICJP representatives highlighted the importance of public pressure in driving accountability, urging citizens to hold their leaders to account for their actions. We all have a part to play in this too, this is a message I convey on a regular basis on this channel. This call to action will I certainly hope, resonate with many in the UK, as long as they hear about it of course, because the mainstream media haven’t covered it, surprise, surprise, where public opinion has increasingly turned against Israel’s actions in Gaza as shown by the increased demonstrations and calling out of this government for aiding and abetting in the criminality Israel perpetrates on a daily basis.
The Global 195 coalition’s efforts raise important questions about the moral and legal responsibilities of political leaders in the face of war crimes and our responsibility to call them out for it. Keir Starmer’s refusal to condemn Israel’s actions, coupled with his support for arms sales, has placed him on the wrong side of history. Israel aside, he’s already being viewed as one of the nastiest, worst Prime Ministers the country has ever had, and certainly one of the most deeply unpopular. His actions not only undermine the principles of international law but also betray the values of justice and human rights that he once supposedly stood for himself as a lawyer. I do wonder just how much of a price he placed on that to sell out seemingly as he has.
The coalition’s focus on complicity is particularly significant, as it challenges the notion that accountability is limited to those who directly commit the crimes. Its easy to demand to see Netanyahu in the Hague, but so should all those enabling him too. By targeting those who aid and abet war crimes, Global 195 is sending a message out that enough is enough and that no one is immune from justice. This approach has the potential to reshape the global response to war crimes, creating a new paradigm in which enablers are held to the same standard as perpetrators and surely that is exactly as it should be?
The launch of the Global 195 coalition hopefully marks a turning point in the fight for justice for Palestinians. By mobilising legal expertise from around the world, who know their stuff, base their actions on evidence gathered, not relying on nonsense headlines or distractions in mainstream media, the coalition has created what has the potential to be a powerful tool for holding individuals and entities accountable for their roles in Israel’s war crimes. Keir Starmer’s complicity in these crimes makes him, I would suggest, a target for prosecution, and his refusal to change course only reinforces the need for accountability, because this is a guy riding on a massive majority, who isn’t delivering for this country and certainly isn’t for Palestine. The only nation that seems to benefit from Keir Starmer is Israel.
Meanwhile as Keir Starmer provides cover for Israel, he’s stripping it from the long term sick and disabled with a Green paper worse than anything the Tories produced if it passes – the supposed party of the working class, choosing to attack the poorest and most vulnerable with the burden of paying for Rachel Reeves economic idiocy.
