Washington, D.C., March 21, 2025 — President Trump signed an executive order Thursday to begin the process of eliminating the Department of Education, a move he called "45 years in the making." The signing ceremony, held in the East Room of the White House, featured multiple school-age children sitting at classroom desks—a clear visual statement on Trump’s push to return educational control to states and parents.

While fully shutting down the department requires congressional approval, the order directs Education Secretary Linda McMahon to take all lawful steps to minimize its size and function. "Beyond core necessities like Pell Grants, Title I funding, and programs for students with disabilities, we’re going to shut it down and shut it down as quickly as possible," Trump declared.

McMahon has already taken major steps in that direction, implementing mass layoffs that cut the department’s workforce nearly in half. She reaffirmed the administration’s stance: “Closing the Department does not mean cutting off funds for students. We will follow the law and eliminate the bureaucracy responsibly, ensuring a lawful and orderly transition.”

Democrats fiercely condemned the move. Sen. Tina Smith (D-MN) called it “more bulls---,” while American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten vowed legal action, saying, “See you in court.” The National Education Association also attacked the decision, claiming it would gut student protections and lead to soaring class sizes.

Despite opposition, Trump stood firm, insisting that "the states will run schools better than Washington ever could." The executive order marks a significant step toward fulfilling his long-held promise to shrink federal government overreach in education.
