To limit the journeys

To curb fraud—

To spare the pigs
From the tormentors we’ve been,
And the geese, who suffer,
With funnels forced into their beaks.
To restrain the use of hormones
In cows,
And to ease the tax burden—
Perhaps it’s not too late.

To finally learn
That the tide might still turn,
And to show the BBC
That culture can still be worthwhile.
To care for the addicted
Before we ourselves crave the drugs,
We must understand what matters,
Or it will surely be too late.

And will the decibels, in dance halls,
Continue to rise,
While in mansions like palaces,
The rich grow richer still?
The power of our leaders
Will be born from impotence,
And the ideals we once held
Will belong to the past.

So let us all, together,
Before we go to sleep,
Look into our own hearts
Before we definitively succumb
To shallowness, earning money,
To packaging and mere appearances.
For if we don’t, the planet we live on
Will irrevocably be lost.
