Imagine every demon in hell performing the vilest demonic assault in history that would make the scariest horror film seem like a walk in the park…and yet the person they were attacking, Our Lady, was completely undisturbed. That is the story of the Second War in Heaven… you heard that right! But how can there be a Second War in Heaven?

Today’s story comes to us from the mystical visions of Sr. Maria de Agreda, an incorruptible nun who lived in the 17th century.

The episode you’re about to view is part of a long series of spiritual battles involving Our Lady. And in today’s story, the demons, every single one, again attack Our Lady.

Just like in the First War in Heaven, when Saint Michael and the angels battled Lucifer, a Second War in Heaven would take place. But during the first rebellion, the demons did not fight Our Lord and Our Lady in person; they only fought the mysterious Sign of the Woman. So, the battle was renewed so that Christ and Our Lady may “triumph over them in person.”[1]

And so, the demons resolved to attack Our Lady when she was alone in her oratory with the worst demonic attack in history, more terrifying than anything you can imagine. Their first assault lasted 12 hours and was directed toward Our Lady’s exterior senses. They made the most horrible noises and appeared as different kinds of demons in horrid shapes and others as false angels of light. No other creature would have survived the assault if left to the ordinary means of grace. However, Our Lady was not disturbed in any way and remained tranquil throughout the 12 hours.

Next, the demons attacked Our Lady’s interior faculties with every kind of temptation possible, against every virtue, towards every vice. But Our Lady triumphed by practicing all the opposing virtues.

And then things got more intense.

Our Lady asked God to rise up as a just judge, so Our Lord descended from heaven with innumerable angels and saints. Our Lady prostrated herself before her Son and God. And immediately following her humility, Our Lord gave her the power to humiliate the demons. He bound them and gave the chains to Our Lady.

Our Lord, echoing His promise in Genesis chapter 3, declared that a Woman shall crush their head.

Immediately, Our Lady was raised to the sky by Seraphim and was transfigured in the image of Revelation 12. The light of God surrounded her “like the Globe of the sun.”[2] This is similar to Our Lady’s appearance in the 1917 Fatima Apparitions, where God’s Light radiated from Our Lady. She appeared to cry out in sorrows of labor, symbolizing her sorrows during the Passion of Our Lord, by which she labored to bring forth our salvation.

Then, Lucifer stood in the image of a seven-horned red dragon, with all the other demons in horrible shapes. As horrific as this sight seems, the demons were in despair, knowing their struggle was fruitless. They saw the exact Image of the Woman they resisted in the First War in Heaven, but this time, they were held bound by Our Lady herself, radiating the light of God.

Finally, Saint Michael renewed the War in Heaven, which was not a physical battle but a celestial debate. Saint Michael and the angels used the same arguments as at the beginning of time. And in return, the demons’ arguments were again false and vain. Although the Second War wasn’t in heaven because the demons could no longer enter paradise, it’s appropriate to call it the Second War because it was a re-enactment of the celestial debate, we call the First War in Heaven. We do the same when we defend God and Our Lady against public blasphemies. Like Saint Michael, we make a Second War in Heaven. And just as the Angels were inspired by the Image of Our Lady radiating the Light of God, we too should be inspired by Our Lady of Fatima, who also radiated the Light of God, to pray and do penances in reparation for sin, not only in private but especially in the public square.

The great War closed with Our Lady hurling the demons into hell, who howled in despair crushed under her heel.

After that, the fallen losers could no longer tempt Our Lady, and her Immaculate Heart longed to unite both the objects of her love—God and humanity—to her Heart.
