Bodycam shows moments before Maricopa officers shoot man armed with knives

Maricopa, AZ - Edited body-camera footage shows the moments leading to an officer firing his gun on a knife-wielding man at a Marana home earlier this year.

The shooting happened on Jan. 29, shortly before 8 a.m., when officers were dispatched to a mental health crisis. The 911 caller reported that the 39-year-old man was armed with knives.

Once the officers arrived, they said the man refused to drop the weapon.

“Put your hands up,” one officer is heard saying in the video, and the suspect yells back incoherently before making several hand motions with the knives in hand.

Edited bodycam shows the suspect holding two knives and holding them upright before authorities say he made a “sudden threatening advance” to a family member who had taken off into a bedroom. It was at that point that officers fired lethal and less-lethal rounds.

The suspect, who has not yet been identified, was hospitalized as a result of the shooting.
