After weeks of speculation, the UK Work and Pensions Secretary today outlined a plan to get more people working and save £5bn from the welfare bill by 2030. In England and Wales the eligibility criteria for Personal Independence Payments will be tightened.

Changes to Universal Credit, which is paid across Britain, raise the basic rate while cutting the higher rate for those judged too ill to work. In addition, £1bn will be allocated to help long-term sick and disabled people into jobs.
