🔴 HISTORY In 1958, the U.S. government created the designation “Generally Recognized as Safe” (GRAS) to exempt common ingredients like salt or baking soda from testing. However, GRAS has been widely abused by food companies, with cooperative legislators and regulators now determining if a substance is safe.

In European nations, every ingredient must be proven safe before becoming a food ingredient. In America, it’s the opposite—ingredients are not deemed unsafe until after millions of Americans are harmed. The U.S. now has over 10,000 ingredients in its food supply, compared to just 400 in Europe.

🔴 ACTIONS BEING TAKEN RFK Jr. has directed the FDA commissioner to begin the process of changing the rules to eliminate the self-affirmed GRAS pathway for new ingredients. He is also advocating for improved post-market assessments of GRAS chemicals currently in our food to rapidly identify compounds that are making Americans sick.

🔴INTERESTING SIDE NOTE - The Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) list was established by the FDA in 1958 and continues today. Being listed on the GRAS list allows substances already widely considered safe to be exempt from premarket approval if they were "generally recognized as safe" by qualified experts. Through 1976, Amygdalin (B17, Laetrile) was shown on the FDA 's GRAS list. Then in 1977, Amygdalin disappeared from the GRAS list, never to be seen again.
