Lama Dawa Zangpo’s Commentary:
Awareness is like the sun, says Thich Nhat Hanh. The sun is always shining, even when it's behind the clouds, and if we can't see the sun because it's nighttime, it's still shining. It doesn't stop. Awareness is the same. Our awareness is always present, even if we feel confused, even if we are distracted. This is very profound. This is something that as Buddhists we are striving to realize and embody and practice all the time this. Constant awareness. Now, Thich Nhat Hanh says when our awareness is directed on things, they are transformed. The transformation means we see them clearly for what they are, not through confusion and delusion and different kinds of projections, but we see things actually as they are. He doesn't mean things change. He means we see them as they really are. There's a change, but the change is in our perception.
