Jeremiah 51 cont. & 52 – The golden cup - Babylon intoxicated the whole earth is her idolatry. 2017

Jer 51:7
Babylon has been a golden cup in the hand of the LORD, Intoxicating all the earth. The nations have drunk of her wine; Therefore the nations are going mad.

The golden cup by which Babylon has intoxicated the whole earth is her idolatry.

Jer 51:47-48 Therefore behold, days are coming When I shall punish the idols of Babylon; And her whole land will be put to shame, And all her slain will fall in her midst. 48“Then heaven and earth and all that is in them Will shout for joy over Babylon, For the destroyers will come to her from the north,” Declares the LORD.

The idolatry of Babylon has been embraced by the world and consequently, they are going mad. The description of the whore of Babylon in Revelation 17 is strikingly similar.

Rev. 17:4 And the woman was clothed in purple and scarlet, and adorned with gold and precious stones and pearls, having in her hand a gold cup full of abominations and of the unclean things of her immorality,

As with this description being Babylon, it is likely that the reference in Revelation is describing the Holy Roman Empire of the Crusades. They were soundly defeated by the Muslim Empire about 800 years ago. But, as with the idolatry of Babylon, the corrupt religious system lives on.
