NASA astronauts Butch Wilmore and Sunita Williams made a successful return to Earth on Wednesday, March 19, after a challenging and extended space mission. They arrived back aboard a SpaceX capsule, splashing down gently off the coast of Florida, nearly nine months after their originally scheduled week-long stay aboard the International Space Station (ISS).
Sunita Williams Return LIVE Updates: After a prolonged nine-month stay aboard the International Space Station (ISS), NASA astronauts Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore are finally embarking on their return journey. Their SpaceX Dragon spacecraft successfully undocked on Wednesday, initiating a 17-hour voyage back to Earth. The astronaut crew will travel back to Earth alongside Nick Hague and Roscosmos cosmonaut Aleksandr Gorbunov aboard a SpaceX Crew Dragon spacecraft.
Wilmore and Williams have been stranded on the ISS for nine months after reaching there in June last year. They were supposed to stay there for about a week. The astronauts were transported from Earth to the ISS aboard Boeing's Starliner spacecraft.
The capsule containing the two stuck astronauts t deorbits and attempts a splashdown back to earth. Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams launched last June as the first test pilots for Boeing's new Starliner capsule and quickly encountered trouble. Nine months later, they're flying back on SpaceX after Starliner's empty return. The de-orbit burn is scheduled for 2111GMT, and the splashdown first opportunity is scheduled for 2157GMT
