On June 13, 2023 Matthew James Rodriguez a Police Officer of the Warren Police Department located in Warren, MI was reported internally to police after he punched a man several times and also slammed his head into the ground several times while the man was in the process of being fingerprinted in the jail. Once two officers arrived to aid Officer Rodriguez, he then took the man and agressively threw him to the ground in a holding cell. He was put on administrative leave that day and terminated 13 days later on June 26th.

On November 3, 2023 Rodriguez was federally indicted for Deprivation of Rights Under Color of Law, which carries a maximum penalty of up to 10 years in prison, and Falsification of Records, which carries a maximum penalty of up to 20 years in prison. Initially Rodriguez had State charges for assault & battery and willful neglect of duty, but those charges were dismissed so the Federal charges could be filed instead.

As of February 2024, the Federal case for Rodriguez is still pending. Rodriguez is also facing a $50 million civil lawsuit by the man he assaulted. The 2 other officers were named in that suit as well.

You are advised that a charge is merely an accusation and that a defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
