The chief priests, scribes and elders question Jesus’ authority and are stymied when he turns the tables on them with his own, “I’ll answer your question, if you answer mine.” Backed into a corner and afraid to give a straight answer, they do what anyone does when faced with having to admit they were wrong: they punt.
