Kristi Noem: Self-deporting would save illegal aliens tens of thousands in fines

Kristi Noem, Secretary of Homeland Security, discusses the concept of self-deportation for long-term illegal immigrants, suggesting it could save them from substantial fines. When President Trump took office on his first day, he ended an app that previously allowed migrants to seek asylum. That app has since been repurposed into CBP Home. We asked Secretary Noem whether the app is being utilized and if she believes it’s effective. Here’s her response:
“The CBP Home app is building momentum all the time, and we’re continuing to educate the public about it. As of a few days ago, when I last checked, it was being used by hundreds and hundreds of people—I’m not sure if we’ve reached thousands yet, but the numbers grow every day. As people become aware of the criminal penalties for overstaying, especially after receiving final removal orders, they’re also realizing there are financial consequences. For every day someone remains in the country past their final removal order, they could face a penalty of $700 per day. For individuals who have been here for years beyond that date, the fines could add up to tens of thousands, or even hundreds of thousands, of dollars. That’s a significant consequence they could avoid if they choose to self-deport.”
