Why This £6k Diesel Is 'Car Of The Year' 2024 | BMW 730d Review - Beards n Cars

I've wanted to review a BMW 7-Series in BnC for quite some time, and have always loved the styling on the 1990s E38 series cars in particular. These F-Generation models (F01, F02, F03 and F04) are also probably the final generation of the big Beemer flagship which I actually like the look of. So naturally when this 2011 730d SE came up at Affordable Prestige, I had to take it out for a spin - particularly when the price tag is a frankly ridiculous £6k. Cheap flagship luxury cars are nothing new, in fact they are some of the most common cars to find dropping into this kind of price range, but a major change which I think makes these cars more deserving than ever of serious consideration is - efficiency.

Gone are the days of a big two tonne luxury limo equating to a 'gas guzzling' time bomb with unnecessarily fiddly and overengineered motors and quality of life quirks, making some of them an acquired taste. This again is a prime example of how times have changed: A big, handsome, comfortable BMW with ride quality and space to rival a Bentley, but with a 400 lbft (540 Nm) diesel engine which barely turns 1000 rpm when cruising, while returning near enough double the economy of what you'd typically expect from these cars. Its essentially a limo with the frugality of a hatchback, and naturally being a diesel engine, takes significantly higher mileage in its stride more capably than the vast majority of equivalent petrol engines would.

Its about more than just fuel economy and torque though. Everything about the 730d, even as a relatively 'simple' trim level of 7-Series, still feels special, clean, stylish and appealing. The brakes are excellent, acceleration more than adequate, acres of space for passengers and luggage, and handling is spot on for a car of its size. Soundproofing is good, and the interior is well laid out and classy, particularly now in the age of big screens and minimalist boredom. For six grand it's an astonishingly lovely driving experience, particularly if you plan to commute long distances...
