The Best Budget Car In South Africa? | Toyota Starlet Xs Review - Beards n Cars

While visiting South Africa again recently, we of course rented another car for the week, and this time around it was one of what is possibly the best (some may even say THE best) affordable daily runabouts in the sub R300,000 segment, especially in its R226,000 entry level form even when brand new - the facelift shape Toyota Starlet.

The one which we spent our week in Durban with in particular was the Starlet Xs model, based as with all Starlet's of this generation on the Suzuki Baleno, but far more common to see on the road, and with a much broader dealer network for parts and servicing. But with the Suzuki holding higher values on the used market, and offering a slightly higher spec for the money, is this widely praised budget level Toyota really as good as many motoring journalists say?
