Exploring JFE Steel East Japan Works on Ogishima Island

Fascinated by this steel factory in Tokyo, I had a closer look using Google Earth. Ogishima Island is an artificial landmass in Tokyo Bay, located off the coast of Kawasaki, Kanagawa Prefecture. It functions as a major industrial and energy hub, home to JFE Steel East Japan Works – Keihin District, one of Japan’s largest steel production facilities. The island is densely packed with heavy industry, liquefied natural gas terminals, and storage areas for raw materials such as iron ore, coal, limestone, and various alloying metals like nickel, chromium, and manganese used in steelmaking. Access is strictly controlled, with the entire area off-limits to the public, making it a rarely seen part of Japan’s industrial landscape.
