Start Carving Ep 6: Carving a Wand

In this segment, I hand carve a wooden wand. Using minimal tools and a 1x1x12" piece of Basswood. Pretty simple...put the same pattern on all 4 sides and carve the excess away. Round the wood as you progress. This project should take about 1/2 an hour or less if you are proficient with a knife, and around an hour or more if you are just starting out carving.

You can use any type of wood in this style of carving. You can cut out the blank with a bandsaw, but where is the fun in that. This can be done with a branch from the backyard, a dowel, or just about any wood type and size. Use your imagination while doing this. This is relaxing to me, so I wanted to show that you don't have to be an expert to do the carvings I have shown on my channel so far. I am not an expert carver by any means. I started at the end of Nov 2023 so I have only had a few months of practice.

This can be a knife only, but I use a #3 gouge to set the lines that I am going to carve to. You can do this sitting by a fire, sitting at your desk, or watching TV. Something like this is very cheap and easy to do. I have seen wands like this for sale that are over $100 on the internet.

I made this in Jan 2024, but had to delay releasing the footage because this was a gift to my nephew for his birthday.
