The Sig Sauer XM7 Spear was the wrong choice! Garand Thumb Proves IT!! It should have been the M277
I’ve made a couple videos on how the I believe the military made a mistake with the Sig XM5 Spear as the new service rifle. The NGSW (Next Generation Squad Weapon) trials had a few other rifles that seemed to be more “Next Generation” than others. Garand Thumb got his hands on the RM277 and it proves I was right! This should have been chosen over the Sig Spear.
In this video we are sharing our opinions on the military's decision to choose the SIG Spear (M5) for the Next Generation Squad Weapon program over other potential competitors, specifically focusing on bullpup designs and other alternatives like the RM277 rifle and the Desert Tech MDRX. Here are a few main points you covered:
1. **The SIG Spear's Lack of Innovation**: The argument is made that the SIG Spear, while a good rifle, doesn't bring anything truly "next generation" to the table. The design is essentially a larger AR-10 platform with a new caliber, which doesn't necessarily offer significant advancements over existing technology.
2. **Bullpup Design Advantages**: The speaker is a strong advocate for bullpup designs like the RM277 or the Desert Tech MDRX. Bullpup rifles offer a more compact form factor with longer barrels, allowing for better velocity and recoil management while still being easier to handle. The bullpup design also offers better ergonomics and improved cooling, especially for high rates of fire, as seen in the discussion around the RM277.
3. **Logistics and Production**: A recurring theme is that, despite concerns over logistics, adopting a new design like the RM277 or a bullpup rifle wouldn't necessarily be a huge burden. The military would face similar challenges in terms of logistics with any new platform, including the SIG Spear. The speaker also argues that expanding production for a new weapon system could be managed by American manufacturers, with companies like Beretta potentially helping with production.
4. **New Designs Need Time**: The speaker acknowledges that new designs like the RM277 may come with early problems, just as the M16 did when it was first introduced. However, with time and effort, the new designs can evolve and surpass the current platforms.
5. **Moving Beyond the AR Platform**: Ultimately, the speaker believes that the AR platform, particularly the M4, has reached its limit, and a true "next generation" weapon system is necessary. They advocate for pushing beyond familiar systems to something better, just as previous generations of soldiers did when transitioning from older platforms like the M1 Garand to the M16.
**Conclusion**: The speaker is frustrated by the decision to pick the SIG Spear and argues that the military should embrace newer designs like the RM277 to better equip the future forces with more advanced, efficient, and versatile weapons. They seem to believe that the bullpup design holds a lot of promise and could be the way forward for future military firearms.
What are your thoughts on this? Do you agree with the notion that the AR platform has reached its limit, or do you think the military made the right choice with the SIG Spear?
