Economic and Social Pressures on Marriage and Family

In today’s society, the complexities surrounding marriage, family, and economic hardship are more pronounced than ever. As individuals and families face increasing financial pressures—particularly in the form of medical debt or the burden of raising children with special needs—the strain on marriage can feel unbearable. Divorce or living together outside of marriage, in some cases, seems like the only option. Yet, many find that stepping outside of God’s plan for marriage and family brings unintended consequences, leaving individuals even more broken than they were before.
A recent conversation between a man named Steve and myself touched on these issues, and it offered a chance to reflect on the deeper implications of making decisions based on economic necessity rather than on the moral and spiritual truths found in Scripture. Steve’s concerns were centered on the rising economic burden couples face in today’s society and the need to challenge oppressive systems, like insurance and medical costs. He expressed a deep frustration with religious leaders who, in his view, fail to address these economic realities, while continuing to uphold traditional views on marriage and monogamy.
In response, I shared a few personal experiences from my 40 years of ministry, reflecting on the difficulties couples face when they are forced to choose between following God’s plan for marriage or giving in to the pressures of economic hardship. These personal stories highlight the consequences of such decisions and offer an opportunity to consider how God’s Word provides guidance for handling life's most challenging circumstances, including financial strain and marital difficulty.


When Jesus called His disciples, He chose twelve men. Each one had their own weaknesses—Peter, the impulsive fisherman; Thomas, the doubter; Judas, the betrayer. Yet, despite all their flaws, Jesus had confidence in them. He knew they would falter, but He also knew they would finish strong.
