WITT: “Okay. Listen, we don’t even have to look to tomorrow when it comes to Schumer, who’s taking a lot of heat from Democrats today, yesterday as well for encouraging Senate colleagues to advance that GOP spending bill. Schumer insists he is playing the long game, saying a shutdown would give Trump more power to cut the federal workforce. Do you think Schumer’s calculus pays off for him?”

BAKER: “Well, look. This goes to. The heart of. The democratic internal. Debate right now as to how to be an opposition to Donald Trump. On the one side, you have a lot of people in the base and most senators and nearly every house Democrat who think that they need to stand up to Trump, that this is the one chance they had in a in a Congress where they don’t have the majority to actually stop the Republicans from doing what they want to do. But then you have a handful of Democrats who went. Along with Schumer and other Democrats who say, look, let’s let Trump bury himself. Let’s let him self-destruct. And by having a government shutdown, we would be turning the attention and the blame to Democrats rather than Trump. And so don’t go down that road. It’s falling into his trap. So that’s the debate going on right now among Democrats. But it’s pretty heated and it’s pretty striking and it’s pretty fundamental.”
