TRUMP ON CANADA - I said, this would be won in one hour
Former President Donald Trump has once again called out Canada’s unfair trade practices and its history of imposing excessive tariffs on American goods. In a recent speech, Trump recalled how, during his first term, he quickly resolved Ontario’s tariff threats and condemned the Canadian government’s trade barriers that have harmed American farmers for decades.
Trump explained that when his administration faced Canadian tariffs, the response was swift and effective. "It wasn’t going to be a tough battle. It wasn’t going to be hard," he said. "When Ontario tried to impose tariffs, I simply announced what we were going to do, and within an hour, they backed off." This statement highlights Trump’s approach to confronting global leaders with strength and without concessions, a stark contrast to the weak and appeasing policies of previous administrations.
One of the key issues Trump emphasized was Canada’s exploitative dairy tariffs on U.S. products. While the United States has allowed Canadian goods to enter with minimal restrictions, American farmers have faced taxes of up to 400% on certain products. "Have you ever heard that we have tariffs on Canadian dairy products of 270%, going up to 400%?" he asked. "You never hear that. Canada is absolutely one of the worst when it comes to charging tariffs."
The former president sharply criticized past administrations' mismanagement of trade agreements and the lack of leadership in the White House under Joe Biden. "We have been mismanaged for so many years," he stated, emphasizing that Biden’s weak stance has allowed these trade abuses to continue unchecked. According to Trump, his administration had already taken steps to balance trade with Canada, but Biden’s presidency reversed those gains. "I had all of this resolved in my first term. But then, of course, Biden let it all go to hell."
Trump’s statements reinforce his commitment to protecting American workers and farmers from foreign exploitation. His "America First" approach relied on tough negotiations and reciprocal tariffs against countries that imposed unfair taxes on U.S. goods. This strategy led to trade renegotiations that benefited American producers and prevented the U.S. from being taken advantage of by both allies and economic competitors.
Trump’s trade policy was also evident in his renegotiation of NAFTA, which was replaced by the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). This deal removed many of the disproportionate advantages Canada had in sectors like agriculture and automotive, leveling the playing field for U.S. producers.
Under the Biden administration, however, Canada has once again implemented restrictions that negatively impact the U.S. economy. Biden’s weak foreign policy has allowed foreign leaders to reintroduce unfair trade practices without fear of consequences. Meanwhile, the White House has focused on progressive policies and pushing a globalist agenda instead of defending the interests of the American worker.
Trump has made it clear that his return to the White House would mean a revival of his tough, fair trade strategy. "We can’t keep letting other countries take advantage of us," he said. "When I’m back, there will be no more unfair deals. We won’t allow Canada or any other country to hit us with massive tariffs while we give them free access."
Trump’s message resonates with millions of Americans who have seen their economy weakened by poorly negotiated trade deals and administrations that prioritize other countries’ interests over their own people. The 2024 election is shaping up to be a battle between the vision of a strong, independent America and a Democratic administration that has failed to defend the nation’s economic sovereignty.
