Rep Katie Britt says IT'S TIME to SHUT DOWN the Department of Education
Senator Katie Britt Calls for the Shutdown of the Department of Education: "It's Time to Return Control to the States"
In a bold call to action, Republican Senator Katie Britt has reiterated her stance on eliminating the U.S. Department of Education. During an interview with Benny Johnson, Britt argued that the federal education system has failed in its mission to improve the quality of teaching in the country and that it is time to return authority to the states and local governments.
Since its creation in 1979, the Department of Education was justified as a means to reduce the educational gap between the wealthier and less fortunate sectors of society. However, more than four decades later, the results have been alarmingly poor. "Has it closed the gap? No, it hasn't," Britt stated. "If we look at the current data, we'll see that the education system hasn't improved at all. Other countries have advanced while we have fallen behind."
The numbers back her claims. According to recent reports, reading and math proficiency levels have plummeted, with 69% of eighth-grade students failing to reach adequate reading comprehension levels. Additionally, math scores have dropped below pre-COVID levels. "That is completely unacceptable," the senator emphasized.
For Britt, the key to improving education in America is not to continue feeding an ineffective bureaucratic system but to empower state and local governments to take charge of education. "We need to provide our children with real education—math, reading, science. Things that truly matter and will allow them to succeed," she said.
The Department of Education’s focus on progressive ideologies and political indoctrination instead of strong academic instruction has been a major concern for parents and conservative leaders nationwide. Rather than strengthening student performance, the federal government has pushed programs based on critical race theory, gender identity policies, and curricula that prioritize a political agenda over academic excellence.
The senator also stressed that education should be a path toward personal success and self-sufficiency, not a tool for ideological indoctrination. "If we truly want to close the gap between the haves and the have-nots, we must ensure that all children receive a solid educational foundation that prepares them for professional careers and job opportunities that will allow them to support their families," she noted.
The call to eliminate the Department of Education has become a central issue within the conservative movement, with Republican leaders demanding that states take full control of the education system. According to Britt, decentralizing education control would allow communities to design curricula that reflect their values and priorities instead of complying with mandates from Washington D.C.
The decline of the U.S. education system has led millions of families to seek alternatives such as homeschooling and private schools, fleeing a public system that no longer serves its original purpose. States like Florida and Texas have led the fight for educational freedom, giving parents the power to choose what kind of education their children receive.
For Senator Britt, this is the model to follow. "It’s time to try something different," she concluded. "We can no longer allow our children to be victims of a failed system. We must act now to return power to the states and ensure that every student has the opportunity to thrive and achieve their American Dream."
