Williamson County, Illinois — On December 2, 2024, at 2:02 p.m., Williamson County Sheriff’s Office Deputies responded to a 911 call from a driver stating their vehicle would not stop. Deputies caught up to the vehicle traveling westbound on old route 13 at Division Street near Carterville. The vehicle had brake lights visibly activated however, the vehicle was not decelerating and continued traveling at approximately 30 miles per hour. After following the vehicle Deputies determined that it was unsafe to continue and a rolling roadblock was conducted.

The maneuver was performed by passing the vehicle, positioning in front of it, and then slowly decelerating until the front bumper gently made contact with the rear bumper of the patrol vehicle. Once contact was made the patrol vehicle utilized its brakes to bring both vehicles to a complete stop. The maneuver was successful and the runaway vehicle was stopped approximately 1/4 of a mile before reaching Crab Orchard Lake. EMS responded to the scene out of an abundance of caution as the driver stated she was pregnant. The Williamson County Sheriff’s Office patrol vehicle sufficed no damage and very minor damage was incurred by the runaway vehicle.
