Shooting From The Hip - 24 - Physical Human Limits
How long can the average person hold their breath for underwater?
the average healthy person can hold their breath for 3-5 minutes
the ability to hold their breath can be increased if the person exercises regularly, is a diver or professional athlete
breath holding for the untrained can cause high blood pressure, brain damage, fainting
Freediving, breath-hold diving, or skin diving
is a form of underwater diving that relies on breath-holding until resurfacing rather than the use of breathing apparatus such as scuba gear.
Besides the limits of breath-hold, immersion in water & exposure to high ambient pressure also have physiological effects that limit the depths & duration possible in freediving.
WORLD CHAMPION - HERBERT NITSCH
The current freediving World Record holder named “the Deepest Man on Earth”.
title was given to him when he then set the world record for freediving at an incredible depth of 214 meters (702 ft) in 2007 in the 'No Limit' discipline. He surpassed this with a 'No Limit' dive to 253 m (830 ft).
No Limits Freediving is the discipline that requires the deepest free diving to be done. During No Limits Freediving, divers use a weight to pull them deep into the ocean & then a buoyancy control device to pull them back up to the surface.
Herbert can hold his breath for more than 9 minutes.
Alexey Molchanov (Russian: born 6 March 1987 Volgograd) - is a Russian champion freediver, 24-time world champion, world record holder & freediving promoter
also president of the "Freediving Federation" association
head of freediving school named in honor of Natalia Molchanova & designer & engineer of the freediving equipment brand Molchanovs. Alexey is a son of Natalia Molchanova – multiple champion & world record holder in freediving.
He achieved his first world record in 2008 in a pool discipline called Dynamic Apnea, in which he swam 250m underwater with a monofin on one breath. Since then he focused on the depth disciplines & began to compete in the open water.
Breath holding underwater - 27 March 2021, he broke the record for the longest time breath held voluntarily (male) with a staggering time of 24 minutes 37.36 seconds. However, the 56-year-old free-diver was determined to break this record & persevered with his training as soon as he could.
Without training, we can manage about 90 seconds underwater before needing to take a breath. But on 28 February 2016, Spain's Aleix Segura Vendrell achieved the world record for breath-holding, with a time of 24 minutes. However, he breathed pure oxygen before immersion.
Iceman - world record Dutch adventurer Wim Hof is a human icicle - called the "Iceman" for good reason - a man with incredible tolerance to cold
holds the Guinness World Record for sitting in an ice bath for 1 hour, 52 minutes & 42 seconds - something most people can only tolerate for a few seconds. May 7, 2018
“The Iceman” Wim Hof has not only helped advance scientific understanding, but also accomplished extraordinary feats of human endurance, including 21 Guinness World Record s - his most memorable achievements.
Running a half marathon (13.1 miles/21 kilometres) above the Arctic Circle, barefoot only wearing shorts
Swimming underneath ice for 66 meters
Hanging on one finger at an altitude of 2,000 meters
Climbing the highest mountains in the world while wearing only shorts
Running a full marathon in the Namib Desert without drinking (42 km/26.2 miles)
Standing in a container while covered in ice cubes for extended periods of time - Shown scientifically, that the autonomous nervous system related to the innate immune response, can be willfully influenced, something that was previously unknown to science
Beginning of scientific investigations - The first relevant scientific investigation began in 2011 at Radboud University. On 19 April 2011, the results of this study were broadcast on Dutch national television.
Paul Edward Anderson (October 17, 1932 – August 15, 1994) - was an American weightlifter, strongman & powerlifter. He was an Olympic gold medalist, a world champion & a 2-time national champion in Olympic weightlifting. Anderson contributed significantly to the development of competitive powerlifting.
He would perform stunts such as hammering a nail with his bare fist & raising a table loaded with 8 men onto his back.
The Guinness Book of World Records (1985 edition) lists his feat of lifting 6,270 lb (2,840 kg) in a back lift as "the greatest weight ever raised by a human being".
Can humans use 100% of their strength? Your brain sends pain through your body when you exert yourself, as a signal to not push yourself too far. Because if you could muster 100% of your strength, 100% of the time, you'd tear your muscles & break your bones. In fact, you might not even survive using your full strength
