I stepped closer… her hand trembled as she turned the knob.

—Mom, stop! Don’t open the door.

This time, my voice was louder.

Then, I heard it.

A whisper from the other side:

"Let her open it… we just want to come in."

My mom slowly turned to face me.

Her eyes were empty.
