Recency bias makes one a prisoner of the moment. When Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, contrary to false assumptions propagandized by the west, it wasn't Putin's unprovoked effort to reconstitute the old Soviet empire, rather, it was the chickens coming home to roost for thirty years of US foreign policy bent on US hegemony in a unipolar world. Beginning in 1990, the US has broken promises, unilaterally backed out of ABM treaties, installed Aegis missile systems, crossed red lines, overthrown democratically-elected governments, and marched NATO up against Russia's border to provoke a proxy war with Russia. It has succeeded.
