Please pay attention to my safety gear: Helmet, hearing protection, face mask, gloves, and safety pants. I'm cutting a small-diameter tree with my Husqvarna 550xpg chainsaw.

The first two cuts are to cut a notch or a face cut. The first cut's angle is about 30 degrees. The second cut is 90 degrees to create the notch. The notch's depth should be a maximum of â…“ of the tree's diameter.

The third cut is called the back cut, and its purpose is to make the trunk weaker from behind, but NOT to cut the tree in half. The back cut is about one or two inches higher than the second cut to make a better and stronger hinge.

The hinge is the uncut portion of the trunk between the face cut and the back cut. Hinge's job is to control the tree's falling motion in all dimensions.
