Long Island wildfires: Blazes started accidentally in attempt to make s’mores, police say

Suffolk County police say it appears this past weekend's wildfires on the East End of Long Island were sparked by an innocent attempt to make s'mores in a backyard.

"They used cardboard to initially light that fire," Commissioner Kevin Catalina said.

Police said the backyard fire was put out but embers had already blown east, sparking four wildfires.

"It is believed that the embers from each fire travelled and continuously started more fires," Catalina said.

Police called the s'mores finding preliminary, adding they're continuing to speak with witnesses and investigate tips.
