Why NYC Prison Costs More Than Luxury Hotels in Dubai?
Around the world, there are over 10 million people held in prison. And leading the charge in mass incarceration? The United States.
Yes, the land of the free has not only the highest number of prisoners but also the most prisoners per capita.
But why? What’s the point of keeping so many people locked up, feeding, housing, and managing them? Simple—because incarceration is a business.
This is the prison-industrial complex.
If you want to be a prison entrepreneur, the business model is straightforward:
Private prison companies pitch to the government that they can build and operate prisons more efficiently—cheaper, safer, and faster. In return? They get long-term contracts worth billions.
The more prisoners behind bars, the more money flows.
Prisons charge the government per inmate per day, so to maximize profits, they must either raise the cost per prisoner, lower expenses, or increase the number of inmates.
And what about prison labor? Well, companies looking for cheap, domestic workers don’t need to go overseas. Incarcerated individuals work for pennies on the dollar—no benefits, no complaints, no legal protections.
This is what happens when police, prosecutors, private prisons, government contractors, and corporations come together—the system thrives on keeping more people locked up.
But to be fair, not all prisons are the same. Some cost more, some treat inmates better—but at the end of the day, incarceration remains one of the most profitable industries in America.
So the real question is… how do we break the cycle?
