Shadow of the Pit Blues | The Deepest Cry of Psalm 88
** Psalm 88 is one of the most sorrowful and darkest psalms in the Bible. It was written by Heman the Ezrahite, a wise man and a descendant of the famous Korahites. He was likely a temple musician, a servant of the Lord, and a member of the Levitical family.
Heman wrote this psalm during a time of personal distress, possibly feeling as though God had abandoned him. His words are a raw expression of suffering, isolation, and a deep sense of hopelessness, yet he still cries out to God. The psalm stands as a testament to unshakable faith, even when God feels silent. It is often referred to as a lament psalm, expressing the sorrow of one who feels forsaken but continues to reach out for God.
** Original Text of Psalm 88 (WEB)
1 Yahweh, the God of my salvation,
I have cried day and night before you.
2 Let my prayer enter into your presence.
Turn your ear to my cry.
3 For my soul is full of troubles.
My life draws near to Sheol.
4 I am counted among those who go down into the pit.
I am like a man who has no help,
5 set apart among the dead,
like the slain who lie in the grave,
whom you remember no more.
They are cut off from your hand.
6 You have laid me in the lowest pit,
in the darkest depths.
7 Your wrath lies heavily on me.
You have afflicted me with all your waves. Selah.
8 You have taken my friends from me.
You have made me an abomination to them.
I am confined and I can’t escape.
9 My eyes are dim from grief.
I have called on you daily, Yahweh.
I have spread out my hands to you.
10 Do you show wonders to the dead?
Do the departed spirits rise up and praise you? Selah.
11 Is your loving kindness declared in the grave?
Or your faithfulness in Destruction?
12 Are your wonders made known in the dark?
Or your righteousness in the land of forgetfulness?
13 But to you, Yahweh, I have cried.
In the morning, my prayer comes before you.
14 Yahweh, why do you reject my soul?
Why do you hide your face from me?
15 I am afflicted and ready to die from my youth up.
While I suffer your terrors, I am distracted.
16 Your fierce wrath has gone over me.
Your terrors have cut me off.
17 They came around me like water all day long.
They completely engulfed me.
18 You have put lover and friend far from me,
and my friends into darkness.
** Song Lyrics (Shadow of the Pit Blues)]
[Verse 1]
Yahweh, God of my salvation,
I have cried through the long, dark night.
My prayers rise like smoke before You,
Yet Your silence is my only light.
[Verse 2]
My soul is drowning in sorrow,
My strength is fading like the day.
The grave is waiting, arms wide open,
Like the lost who’ve gone astray.
[Verse 3]
You have laid me in the lowest pit,
Bound by walls of stone and clay.
Your waves crash heavy on my shoulders,
And my hope is swept away.
[Chorus]
Do the dead rise up and praise You?
Does the grave still sing Your name?
Is there mercy in the darkness,
Or is this where it all remains?
[Verse 4]
My friends have turned, they see a stranger,
Like a shadow lost in time.
My tears have carved their own reflection,
But Heaven still won't send a sign.
[Bridge]
From my youth, I’ve borne affliction,
Felt the weight of unseen hands.
Terrors crash like raging waters,
Leaving silence where I stand.
[Chorus - Reprise]
Do the dead rise up and praise You?
Does the grave still call Your name?
Or does mercy die in darkness,
Like a candle lost to rain?
[Outro]
Now I walk beneath the shadows,
Footsteps swallowed by the night.
God, I reach—but You feel distant,
Like a whisper lost in flight.
