Crocodiles have three eyelids that serve different purposes. The upper and lower eyelids function like those of most animals, closing to protect the eyes. The third eyelid, called a nictitating membrane, is translucent and moves horizontally across the eye. This membrane helps protect the eye while the crocodile is underwater and keeps it moist without obstructing vision. It's an essential adaptation for their aquatic lifestyle, allowing them to see clearly both in and out of water.
