Mayor Eric Adams Explains His Daily Work in the Fight Against Crime at a Hearing
In a recent hearing before the House Committee on Oversight and Accountability, New York City Mayor Eric Adams defended his administration and the city’s efforts in fighting crime. As a former police officer with over two decades of experience, Adams emphasized that public safety is his top priority and highlighted the progress achieved during his tenure.
Since taking office, Adams has worked to reverse the damage caused by restrictive policies implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic. According to the mayor, his administration has significantly reduced overall crime, recording three consecutive months of double-digit declines in major crimes. These results, he argued, are proof of his team's commitment to ensuring the safety of New Yorkers.
However, the city faces additional challenges due to its "sanctuary city" status. Adams made it clear that being a sanctuary city does not mean tolerating violent criminals or violating federal immigration laws. In his testimony, he emphasized that New York will continue to comply with municipal, state, and federal regulations while also protecting law-abiding immigrants.
The mayor highlighted immigrants’ contributions to New York’s economic growth, noting that they pay billions in taxes and strengthen the economy through their purchasing power. He also recalled that during the pandemic, many immigrants played essential roles in key sectors such as healthcare and food services, allowing the city to continue functioning during critical times.
Regarding public safety, Adams stressed the importance of building trust between immigrants and law enforcement. He argued that the fear of deportation prevents many from reporting crimes, making police work more difficult and allowing criminals to go free. He recalled a case from his early days as a police officer when a Chinese immigrant refused to file a complaint for fear of federal immigration authorities, demonstrating the negative impact of mistrust in the system.
The mayor also criticized the lack of comprehensive immigration reform, emphasizing that New York has faced the worst humanitarian crisis in its recent history. According to Adams, federal law does not allow him to prevent buses carrying immigrants from entering the city, while state regulations require him to provide housing, food, and education to all residents. Despite these challenges, his administration has managed the crisis with compassion and responsibility, maintaining safety and strengthening the local economy.
To reinforce crime-fighting efforts, Adams highlighted collaboration with federal agencies, stating that over 330 NYPD officers are assigned to joint federal task forces. These units focus on dismantling violent gangs, combating child exploitation, and addressing other public safety threats.
In his closing statement, the mayor reiterated his commitment to working with all levels of government to keep New York the safest major city in the United States. His words reflect his administration’s determination to balance public safety with the protection of immigrant rights, ensuring a safer and more prosperous future for all New Yorkers.
