Hooiberg, meaning "haystack" in Dutch, is a striking 165-meter (541-foot) volcanic formation near the center of Aruba, often mistaken as the island’s highest point, though Jamanota surpasses it at 189 meters. Its distinctive conical shape rises sharply from the flat, arid landscape, making it a prominent landmark visible from nearly anywhere on the island. Composed of unique quartz diorite, Hooiberg features a steep, 587-step concrete staircase built in 1951, leading adventurers to its summit in about 20-30 minutes. The climb rewards hikers with panoramic views of Aruba’s coastline, the Caribbean Sea, and, on clear days, even Venezuela. Along the way, cacti, wild goats, and colorful lizards dot the rugged terrain. Despite radio towers at the top, the vista remains breathtaking. Featured on Aruba’s coat of arms, Hooiberg symbolizes the island’s emergence from the sea, blending natural beauty with cultural significance.
