Most sharks live in the sea, but some species have adapted to fresh water. The best-known representative is the bull shark, which tolerates salt and fresh water thanks to special physiological mechanisms. It migrates kilometres up rivers such as the Amazon, Mississippi or Lake Nicaragua to hunt or give birth to young. Its kidneys and a special gland regulate the salt content in its blood - a survival strategy in changing habitats.
Rare species such as the Ganges shark or the Borneo river shark also live permanently in fresh waters. However, they are extremely endangered and have hardly been researched. Freshwater sharks feed on fish, crustaceans or amphibians and play a key role in their ecosystems.
Despite their reputation, attacks on humans are rare. Dangers usually arise from conflicts in murky water or while fishing.
Freshwater sharks show the amazing adaptability of these prehistoric predators - and are a reminder to protect sensitive river ecosystems. It is amazing that there are sharks in fresh water.
