RADS (Rapid Ascent Descent System) is a method for climbing using a stationary/single rope technique (SRS/SRT). It uses several different pieces of hardware (hand ascender, pulley) and software (foot loop) which make it especially ergonomic, allowing a climber to ascend up a rope more easily than many other systems.

The RADS is especially great for those who are beginners, who are looking for a system to start climbing trees with (or rocks, mountains, and caves, etc.). The foot loop and hand ascender make it very easy for anyone to lift themselves up in order to advance the Petzl GriGri (or a Petzl I.D., Rig and several other devices not made by Petzl), and the pulley attached to the hand ascender allows for the climber to effortlessly advance the system by pulling down on the rope due to the mechanical advantage.

This system is fun, relatively straight forward and easy to use and you don't need to be in peak fitness to climb with it. Contrary to its name, this system is NOT particularly "rapid" whatsoever, due to the amount of time and steps required to remove certain parts of the system after an ascent so that a climber can begin to descend. Therefore, it is important to fully understand how this system works before leaving the ground, and once you do, practice "low and slow" AKA low to the ground and slowly.
