So please be with us upto end of this video as we reflect on her virtues and the lessons we can learn from her life.
Sayyidah Ruqayyah, the beloved daughter of Rasulallah passed away on the 17th Ramadan. She got ill before the Battle of Badr so the Prophet instructed her husband, Sayyiduna 'Uthman ibn 'Affan to stay at home and to look after after her.
Sayyidatuna Ruqayyah (RA), the beloved daughter of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and Sayyidah Khadijah (RA), was a noble woman whose life was marked by trials and tribulations. Her passing was a deeply sorrowful event for the Prophet (PBUH) and the Muslim community.
Sayyidatuna Ruqayyah (RA) was born in Makkah before the Prophethood of her father, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). She was raised in a household that was known for its purity, wisdom, and kindness. Her mother, Sayyidah Khadijah (RA), was a pillar of support for the Prophet (PBUH) and played a significant role in the early spread of Islam. Like her siblings, Sayyidatuna Ruqayyah (RA) was known for her noble character and piety.
Initially, Sayyidatuna Ruqayyah (RA) was married to Utbah, the son of Abu Lahab, who was a staunch opponent of Islam. However, after the declaration of Prophethood, Abu Lahab and his wife, Umm Jameel, forced their son to divorce her in an attempt to disgrace the family of the Prophet (PBUH). This incident was deeply painful for Sayyidatuna Ruqayyah (RA) and her family, but Allah had planned something better for her.
She was later married to Sayyiduna Uthman ibn Affan (RA), a noble and wealthy companion of the Prophet (PBUH). The couple shared a beautiful and loving relationship, and Sayyidatuna Ruqayyah (RA) supported her husband in his faith. When the persecution of the early Muslims in Makkah intensified, the Prophet (PBUH) permitted some of his followers to migrate to Abyssinia, where they could practice Islam freely under the just rule of King Negus. Sayyidatuna Ruqayyah (RA) and Sayyiduna Uthman (RA) were among those who migrated, making them part of the first group of Muslims to seek refuge for their faith.
After spending some time in Abyssinia, Sayyidatuna Ruqayyah (RA) and her husband returned to Makkah. However, the situation for the Muslims did not improve, and they continued to face persecution. When the Prophet (PBUH) instructed his followers to migrate to Madinah, Sayyidatuna Ruqayyah (RA) and Sayyiduna Uthman (RA) made the journey, once again sacrificing their comfort for the sake of Islam.
Upon arrival in Madinah, they settled and started a new life. Sayyidatuna Ruqayyah (RA) was known for her kindness and devotion to Allah. She stood by her husband and played a significant role in supporting the early Muslim community in Madinah.
During the early days of Islam, the Battle of Badr was a significant event. It was the first major battle between the Muslims and the Quraysh of Makkah. While many companions of the Prophet (PBUH) prepared to fight, Sayyidatuna Ruqayyah (RA) fell severely ill. Her condition worsened, and Sayyiduna Uthman (RA) stayed by her side to care for her instead of joining the battle.
When the news of the Muslims' victory at Badr reached Madinah, it was overshadowed by the tragic passing of Sayyidatuna Ruqayyah (RA). She succumbed to her illness and passed away in the blessed city of Madinah. The Prophet (PBUH) was deeply grieved upon hearing of her death. Her burial was attended by her father and the companions, and she was laid to rest in Jannat al-Baqi, the famous cemetery in Madinah.
The passing of Sayyidatuna Ruqayyah (RA) was a heartbreaking moment for the Prophet (PBUH). Despite the victory of the Muslims at Badr, he felt the profound loss of his beloved daughter. However, he remained steadfast in his faith and accepted Allah’s decree with patience and submission.
One of the most emotional moments recorded in history was when Sayyiduna Uthman (RA) was seen grieving at the loss of his wife. The Prophet (PBUH) comforted him, reminding him of the rewards of patience and the eternal reunion in the Hereafter. The Prophet (PBUH) later honored Sayyiduna Uthman (RA) by giving him the hand of his other daughter, Sayyidatuna Umm Kulthum (RA), in marriage, earning him the title of Dhun-Nurayn (The Possessor of Two Lights).
Sayyidatuna Ruqayyah (RA) was a symbol of resilience, patience, and faith. Her life teaches us several valuable lessons:
Trust in Allah’s Plans: Although she faced hardships, including an early divorce, Allah blessed her with a pious husband and an honorable life.
Sacrifice for Islam: Her migration to Abyssinia and later to Madinah reflects the sacrifices she made for the sake of her faith.
Strength in Adversity: Despite facing illness and struggles, she remained devoted to her religion and family.
Love and Loyalty in Marriage: Her relationship with Sayyiduna Uthman (RA) was one of mutual love and support, setting an example for all Muslim couples.
The death of Sayyidatuna Ruqayyah (RA) was a moment of great sorrow for the Prophet (PBUH) and the Muslim community. Yet, her legacy continues to inspire Muslims around the world. She was a woman of faith, patience, and devotion who left an indelible mark on Islamic history. May Allah grant her the highest ranks in Jannah and reunite her with her beloved father, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), in the eternal abode of peace. Ameen.
